Myles Gaskin Takes a Backseat to Malcolm Brown, 2021 Fantasy Outlook Takes a Hit

Malcolm Brown is making us temper our Myles Gaskin 2021 fantasy outlook after the Dolphins' first preseason game.

We thought Myles Gaskin remained unscathed and would produce borderline RB1 or rock-solid RB2 numbers as the Dolphins’ workhorse this season. We thought the Dolphins felt comfortable enough with Gaskin because the team only added Malcolm Brown over the likes of Kenyan DrakeJamaal Williams, and Mike Davis. Then in the draft, the Dolphins passed on Javonte Williams in the second, Trey Sermon in the third, and even Michael Carter, Kene NwangwuRhamondre Stevenson, and Chuba Hubbard in the fourth round.

Funny enough, the same man who terrorized Cam Akers’ owners in 2020, might turn out to be the thorn in Gaskin’s side. Not only did Brown start over Gaskin during the team’s preseason debut, but he played 16-of-23 first-team snaps, was utilized as the goal-line back, and even owned passing downs. Meanwhile, Gaskin only played the remaining seven first-team snaps and even played with the second-team offense into halftime.

“We are going to use them situationally as best fits their skill set and what’s best for the team,” Brian Flores said as he continued to add fuel to the fire. “Myles Gaskin can play first, second, third down, but depending on the situation, we may put another player in there…

“Malcolm Brown is a little bigger, what you may consider a power back. Myles is change of pace, good quickness. Salvon Ahmed has good speed, coming out of the backfield. They all played well in the preseason game.”

In only 10 games, Gaskin racked up 972 total yards and five scores on 183 touches. Had Gaskin remained healthy, he was on pace to finish with 1,555 all-purpose yards, which would’ve ranked fourth behind only Derrick Henry (2,141), Dalvin Cook (1,918), and Alvin Kamara (1,732).

Based on Brown’s past and Flores’ comments, the former Ram will likely own the goal-line, while the Dolphins’ deploy Salvon Ahmed as a change-of-pace back.

We aren’t writing off Gaskin completely, but he is no longer considered the big offseason winner we thought he was going to be. Now saddled in a committee, or even an RB2 role, Gaskin plummeted from our RB21 to RB32 on our 2021 Fantasy Rankings. Meanwhile, Brown moved up just two spots to RB57.
