2019 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Week 9 Start, Stream & Stash

Start, Stash and Stream your way to an all-important Week 9 victory.

We’re back for the 2019 Fantasy Waiver Wire Week 9 Start, Stash and Stream, where we break down the Free Agent landscape and give you the best picks for the short and long haul. We’ll keep building on our Week 8 Waiver Wire momentum.

Per usual, think of this Waiver Wire set-up kind of like dating. In the first category, you’ve met “the one,” the love of your life, and you want to keep him/her forever. Those are your “Starts.”

Next, you have the person you’ve known for a while, but you find yourself asking: what are we? One week in, one week out, holding on for comfort and little else… they’re the “Stashes.” You just can’t quit them.

And then you have that Tinder date that serves a one-time purpose, most often leaving you feeling dirty and hopeless, but occasionally a solo home run. These are your “Streams.”

With all that went down Week 8, here’s what we can use going forward.

Note – Ownership % based on Yahoo; all players are less than 50% owned

Start

  1. Jaylen Samuels, RB Pittsburgh Steelers (20% owned)
  2. Mark Walton, RB Miami Dolphins (33%)
  3. Danny Amendola, WR Detroit Lions (10%)

With James Conner (sprained AC joint) and Benny Snell (knee) both leaving the MNF game early against the hapless Dolphins, it looks like Jaylen Samuels is the only legitimate option remaining in the Steelers’ backfield. Conner left the stadium in a sling and we’ll have an update on him at some point this week, but Samuels, who practiced in full last week, should get the Week 9 start. If Conner is out for a longer period of time, Samuels has massive stretch run upside off the waiver wire.

As of the typing of this Waiver Wire article, the Dolphins are currently playing the Steelers in which Mark Walton is running as Miami’s new starter in wake of the trade sending Kenyan Drake to the Cardinals. Against Buffalo in Week 7, Walton had 14 carries for 66 yards, while new backup Kalen Ballage only carried the ball three times. Miami doesn’t put up impressive numbers, but the usage of a team’s RB1 on the waiver wire is tough to pass on.

This marks two weeks in a row that Danny Amendola has broken double digit fantasy points after an 8 catch, 95 yard day. His chemistry with Stafford is really showing right now and he’s becoming a target hog in his expanding role. A plus matchup with the Raiders next week should allow Amendola to continue his hot streak.

Stash

  1. Derrius Guice, RB Washington Redskins (29%)
  2. Cam Newton, QB Carolina Panthers (41%)
  3. Chris Herndon, TE New York Jets (28%)
  4. Darren Fells, TE Houston Texans (19%)
  5. Chris Conley, WR Jacksonville Jaguars (3%)
  6. Tra Carson, RB Detroit Lions (0%)
  7. Trey Edmunds, RB Pittsburgh Steelers (0%)
  8. Kalen Ballage, RB Miami Dolphins (10%)

Big news came out of Redskins camp with Derrius Guice on track to suit up in Week 11 following the team’s bye. Guice only played in one game this year after missing his entire rookie year with a torn ACL. In his one game, he rushed 10 times for 18 yards, but he offers long term upside for the fantasy playoffs in Bill Callahan’s ancient run-heavy offense.

With the absolute stinker that Kyle Allen put up in San Francisco, it’s clear that once Cam Newton is healthy, he’ll be the team’s starter. It looks like at the moment it will be Week 10 when we see Newton return to the field. If you are struggling at QB or looking for a late spark to your season, Newton could be that guy with a very favorable stretch run schedule.

We’ve only been waiting forever for Chris Herndon to step on the football field… and it looks like our wait is finally over. After a four game suspension and a hamstring injury, Herndon “looks better” for Week 9 and should be making his season debut. He’s still available in a bunch of leagues and should be added.

Tight end Darren Fells was on the receiving end of a monster day in Houston’s offense with a 6-58-2 stat line against the Raiders. He’s been a touchdown dependent tight end, but he’s scored five times already this year and is proving to be a red zone threat for Deshaun Watson.

Chris Conley broke the 100 yard plateau against the Jets in Week 8 going for 4-103-1 on 7 targets. That’s 7 targets in back-to-back games from the ever-improving Garnder Minshew. Next week’s matchup against the Texans should require the Jaguars to score plenty. He was tied with Leonard Fournette for second on the team with those 7 targets.

While everyone blew their FAAB load on Ty Johnson last week, a creature named Tra Carson led Matt Patricia’s team in carries with 12 — of course. Although we’d still lean Johnson from a fantasy perspective, it’ll be a tough cookie to figure out over the next few weeks. If you have the space, it wouldn’t hurt to add Carson to the end of your roster while the Lions figure out their running back situation.

As noted above, all of the Steelers RB’s heads are falling off. Just kidding, but you know what I mean. This potentially leaves Samuels and Trey Edmunds as their lone Week 9 RBs against the Colts.

Mark Walton appears to be the heir apparent to Miami’s RB1, but Kalen Ballage is still in the picture here. Ballage has yet to score more than 7 points in a game this year, but his workload and goal line touches should increase with Drake’s departure.

Stream

  1. Derek Carr, QB Oakland Raiders (26%)
  2. Philadelphia Eagles D/ST (39%)
  3. Cleveland Browns D/ST (24%)

Last week Derek Carr went off for 23 fantasy points thanks to a 285 yard and 3 score passing day against the Texans. With a matchup against the Lions upcoming, Carr can put up similar numbers to his Week 8 stats — especially after Danny Dimes dropped 4 touchdowns on them.

The defense to stream next week could very well be the Philadelphia Eagles. Their season is hanging in the balance as any loss would be devastating to their playoff chances. They welcome the Bears to the Linc on Sunday, whose offense has been absolutely putrid this year. The Eagles are hungry, and could eat Mitch alive.

The other defense to look at would be the Cleveland Browns who are facing the Denver Broncos. The Broncos are leaning on something called Brandon Allen, who will be starting in place of an injured Joe Flacco. Why not take a flier on the Browns defense?
