Kendall Hinton Fantasy Outlook: Broncos Week 12 Emergency QB, Intriguing Fantasy Designations

COVID-19 ripped through the Broncos QB room, giving practice squad WR Kendall Hinton an intriguing fantasy outlook as the potential starting QB.

On Saturday we reached peak 2020 in the NFL. With COVID-19 ripping through the league, it found its way to the Broncos quarterback room. While it only got to Jeff Driskel, the rest of the room was barred from their Week 12 game against Taysom Hill and the Saints. Yep, that means no Drew Lock, no Driskel, no Brett Rypien, and no Blake Bortles. Although RB Royce Freeman is the team’s emergency QB if something drastic were to happen in a game, the Broncos are planning on elevating former Wake Forest QB/WR and current practice squad WR, Kendall Hinton, to play quarterback.

Given Hinton hasn’t played quarterback since early 2018, it’s sure to be a disaster from a real football standpoint. But from a fantasy perspective, Hinton has WR designation on Yahoo and the elusive RB, WR, TE designation on CBS. Unfortunately, ESPN learned their lesson from last week’s Taysom Hill TE debacle and only has Hinton listed as a QB.

As for Hinton, he played at Wake as a QB for roughly three years before seeing the writing on the wall. He then transitioned to wide receiver in 2018 and 2019. According to Dane Brugler, Hinton is “not very big (5-10, 193), but a tough, coordinated athlete. I gave him a 7th round [WR] grade in the draft guide.”

As a quarterback, he completed 133 of 251 passes (53 percent) for 1,504 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also ran the ball 188 times for 881 yards and 12 touchdowns.

While Ian Rapoport said Hinton will play “plenty of quarterback,” I would expect to see mostly Hinton, along with some spatterings of Freeman, Melvin Gordon, and Phillip Lindsay in the Wildcat. The team has yet to run any Wildcat this year, but they ran it three times last year with Lindsay at QB.

If your fantasy team has been hit with the COVID or injury bug and you’re desperate for a Flex in Yahoo or even a TE/Flex stream in CBS, then Hinton isn’t the worst option. It’s likely going to be an absolute mess on the field, but he could find the end zone and pick up some yards in a variety of ways. Check out The Wolf’s Week 12 Rankings Sunday AM to see where Hinton and the rest of the Broncos land.

Oh, yeah. Bench all Broncos pass-catchers if you haven’t already.
