Donte Moncrief Striving for Steelers WR2 Spot After Hot Start at Camp

Donte Moncrief is ready to breakout in Pittsburgh.

Outside of Andrew Luck for a short time period, Donte Moncrief has been expected to make chicken salad out of chicken shit during his 5-year career. Now with future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger throwing him the ball, he finally has a chance to show his capabilities. Moncrief got his nose inside the playbook and quickly gained Big Ben’s trust during camp, showing the quarterback that he can be on the same page right away. With Antonio Brown’s 168 targets up for grabs and DBs keying on JuJu Smith-Schuster, the Steelers desperately need a second wideout to step up, and thus far, it looks like Moncrief could be that guy.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect when he came in,” Roethlisberger said. “I didn’t know him and now just getting to see his work ethic, the type of person he is, his desire to be great, his knowledge of the offense already. We’ll do no-huddle stuff and I’ll give him a signal and I’ll be like, ‘You good?’ and he’ll be like, ‘Yeah.’ He is in with coach (Darryl) Drake every single morning, pretty much all day.”

Moncrief’s big frame (6’2, 221 lbs) and attributes (4.40 40, 39.5″ vert) have never been the issue. It’s been his inability to stay on the field (11 missed games) and surrounding talent that has always left fantasy owners wanting more. Now in an offense that has notoriously put up points, it’s no surprise he’s one of our favorite Penny Stocks — coming in at our WR38 (+22 vs ECR).
