Patrick Mahomes’ Knee Injury Shakes up Chiefs’ Fantasy Landscape

We all dodged a major bullet when Patrick Mahomes' MRI showed the best case scenario.

Our fantasy lives flashed before our eyes on Thursday Night Football when Patrick Mahomes’ knee dislocated while trying to gain a first down on a quarterback sneak. We legitimately saw the Chiefs’ medical staff pop Mahomes’ knee back into place on the field, before he was helped off the field.

Luckily, we heard the best case scenario after Mahomes underwent a MRI on Friday, when RapSheet told us he would only miss three weeks after dislocating his right knee cap.

Fantasy’s most explosive offense will obviously take a hit with Matt Moore under center, but Andy Reid is an offensive genius who will make him more serviceable than he’s ever looked during his journeyman career. You shouldn’t be starting him at any point, but the offense won’t be completely inept with him calling the shots.

Moore’s 57-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill shows that Hill’s speed and route-running makes him borderline quarterback proof, but he will take a hit without Mahomes’ rocket-launcher throwing him the football.

One positive could be a potential resurgence of the Chiefs’ very frustrating run game. With Moore at QB, they’ll likely have to lean on the run game a bit more and hopefully one of them can separate from the pack. Over the last two games, Damien Williams has only played 32 percent of the snaps and averaged a mind-blowing 6.5 touches per game. That needs to change.

Due to the tight end position being horrendous, Travis Kelce will continue to be top five at his position. It’s also pretty common that backups will check down and target their tight end more than outside receivers.

But while Mahomes is out, feel free to drop the rest of the other cute Chiefs’ wideouts. They’re already becoming frustrating and they’ll become even more frustrating and useless with Mahomes out of the lineup.

Get well soon, MVP.
