How to Draft From the 10 Spot in 2023 Fantasy Football (Half-PPR)

With the 10th overall pick...

If you land the 10th pick in your 2023 fantasy football league with Half-PPR scoring, you can attack your draft in a few ways. Depending on your league mates, you may have A.J. Brown, Ceedee Lamb, Saquon Barkley, Nick Chubb, or even Bijan Robinson available at that spot. The 10th pick in a 12-team league allows you to choose your roster build early on after the turn, with an Anchor RB or Zero RB Strategy or an early QB/WR stack with Brown and Jalen Hurts.

Here’s how I attacked the Roto Street Journal 12-team mock draft with Half-PPR scoring (QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, and FLEX) from the 10 spot:

RSJ MOCK DRAFT TEAM

1.10: A.J. Brown, WR, PHI
2.02: Garrett Wilson, WR, NYJ
3.10: Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, DET
4.03: Justin Fields, QB, CHI
5.10: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, TEN
6.03: Mike Williams, WR, LAC
7.10: George Pickens, WR, PIT
8.03: Khalil Herbert, RB, CHI
9.10: Dak Prescott, QB, DAL
10.03: Rashaad Penny, RB, PHI
11.10: Damien Harris, RB, BUF
12.03: Cole Kmet, TE, CHI
13.10: Chig Okonkwo TE, TEN
14.03: Rondale Moore, WR, ARI

DRAFT BREAKDOWN

After looking at this team, I’m not too upset with it, following my cell service giving out and missing picks 9:10 through 14.03.

I attacked WR early, taking two high-upside players in A.J. Brown and Garrett Wilson. I chose Jamhyr Gibbs as my hero RB in this build in the third round and followed up with my favorite quarterback this season, Justin Fields. Things started not going my way at the 5/6 turn, where I settled for two vets, DeAndre Hopkins and Mike Williams.

I continued to draft high-upside players instead of settling for an RB and took George Pickens in the seventh. Pickens is a player you can’t pass up on in drafts this season. He has the chance to make you regret not taking him, and if he’s sitting in a spot around players like Brandin Cooks, Quentin Johnston, Jaxson Smith-Njigba, and Gabe Davis, I’m going to take the chance on a second-year breakout almost every time.

Khalil Herbert felt right at 8.03, and that’s when the auto pick disaster happened. I’m not upset with the rest of the build, as both Rashaad Penny and Damien Harris have chances to score in high-octane offenses. The tight-end double-up of Cole Kmet and Chig Okonkwo is not a bad way to go when missing out on the top dogs.

WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY

After looking at the draft board, I was happy with my picks until round nine. At round nine, I was given Dak Prescott. I would’ve been content with the former QB2 if I had no QB then. However, I needed an RB with my build, and AJ Dillon was sitting right there. That pick would’ve filled out my roster and allowed me to take a running back with more volatility later in the draft.

At 11.10, I would change my selection of Damien Harris to Sam LaPorta as my TE1. I don’t think taking Harris would have changed my running back situation for the better, and Laporta’s upside outweighs Harris’.

To round out the draft, I would’ve taken a flier on Marvin Mims over Rondale Moore (before the Jeudy news). I have selected Mims late in nearly all my best ball drafts this offseason. He has a good chance to be the No. 1 option for Russell Wilson and can have a major impact to start the season for your team.

Overall, it’s a solid roster for this build at the 1.10. It has real potential if you can trust your ability to work the waiver wire, make trades, and make the right lineup decisions.

FAVORITE PICK (GEORGE PICKENS: 7.10)

George Pickens was my favorite pick of the draft from the 10-slot. The Steelers are a team on the rise if Kenny Pickett can develop in his second season. Pickens is an elite playmaker and had an average depth of target of 15.6 last season. If Pickens comes close to his ceiling, he will be a mid-level WR2 and a steal as his mid-seventh-round selection.

PICK I REGRET (DAMIEN HARRIS 11.10)

Damien Harris has been banged up all offseason and is stuck behind James Cook and competing with Latavius Murray. Although Murray isn’t a prominent name in fantasy football, and even at 32 last season, he averaged 4.4 yards an attempt for the Broncos while rushing for 703 yards. In round 11, high-upside players like Rashee Rice, Romeo Doubs, or Sam Laporta were all on the board.
