Dolphins Eyeing RB1 During Offseason, Myles Gaskin 2021 Fantasy Stock Falters

Myles Gaskin's 2021 fantasy outlook will take a significant hit if/when the Dolphins add a feature back in free agency or the NFL draft.

Prior to landing on injured reserve in Week 8 and then the COVID-19 list, Myles Gaskin was one of the most significant 2020 fantasy football surprises. Even though he missed six games, Gaskin finished as fantasy’s RB27, among the likes of James Conner and Miles Sanders. Looking at his weekly fantasy points average, Gaskin finished as the 2020 RB12 with 14.4 points per game. However, Dolphins beat writer, Cameron Wolfe, said the Dolphins will look to add a top-tier running back in the draft or in free agency to replace Gaskin as the team’s RB1 and he’ll be more of a depth piece next season with his former college teammate, Salvon Ahmed.

Wolfe pointed at some of the top free agents, such as Aaron Jones and Leonard Fournette, as potential targets. He also talked up Alabama’s Najee Harris and North Carolina’s Javonte Williams as potential options in the 2021 NFL Draft.

“It would be a shock if the Dolphins don’t come away with a new feature back this offseason,” wrote Wolfe. “Gaskin and Ahmed showed promised, but they are best as rotation backs. Najee Harris (Alabama) and Javonte Williams (North Carolina) await as tantalizing draft options. If Miami wants to spend on a free-agent starter instead, then Green Bay’s Aaron Jones is the top name to watch — if he hits the market. Le’Veon Bell or Leonard Fournette are intriguing secondary options if paired with another young back.”

Although one could argue all four of those players could be an upgrade at the position, Gaskin was more than serviceable as a three-down back during last season. In 10 games, he finished with 584 yards (4.11 YPC) and three touchdowns on the ground, while adding 41 receptions, 388 yards, and two touchdowns through the air.

Gaskin is currently sitting at RB26 (+2 vs ECR) on The Wolf’s 2021 Fantasy Football Rankings & Big Board. Expect Gaskin’s 2021 fantasy outlook and fate to be decided in the near future with NFL free agency set to open on March 17 and the NFL Draft scheduled for April 29.
