The Panthers’ wide receiver room looks a lot different heading into the 2025 season, and no player benefits more from the shake-up than Jalen Coker. Carolina traded veteran Adam Thielen back to the Vikings, released Hunter Renfrow, and handed the slot role directly to Coker. For a guy who was an undrafted rookie just a year ago, that’s quite the glow-up.
“Any time you lose a receiver like Adam [Thielen], it’s a big loss,” Panthers GM Dan Morgan said. “But at the same time, we’re really excited about our young core of receivers. Jalen Coker’s going to step into the slot, we’re going to utilize a lot of resources with [Xavier Legette] and [Tetairoa McMillan].”
Translation: Coker is starting in the slot for a Panthers offense that looks like it’s quietly on the rise.

So, what does that mean for Jalen Coker’s fantasy football outlook? Let’s break it down for all the current and future Coke Heads out there.
REWIND: BIG-TIME SLOT TOOLS
First, let’s revisit why he was such a popular sleeper in #FantasyTwitter circles coming out of FCS Holy Cross, a school best known for notable alumni like Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn, Bill Simmons, and, of course, our fearless leader, The Wolf.

Coker absolutely crushed the pre-draft process, earning a 9.46 Relative Athletic Score (RAS). His numbers were eye-popping:
- 42.5” vertical jump (98th percentile)
- 10’8” broad jump (elite explosiveness)
- 1.52 10-yard split on a 4.57 40-yard dash
At 6’3” and 213 pounds, Coker has the size of a prototypical outside receiver, but his agility and explosiveness make him perfect for the slot. That blend of traits is exactly what made him a matchup nightmare in college, where he dominated FCS defenses and proved himself at the Shrine Bowl against top-tier competition.
UNDRAFTED ROOKIE TO STARTER
Coker didn’t exactly come into the NFL with a red-carpet entrance on draft night. He was an undrafted free agent out of an FCS school, but that didn’t stop him from making an immediate impression in Carolina. As a rookie, he appeared in 11 games and started four, catching 32 passes for 478 yards and two touchdowns.

Those numbers may not scream “league winner,” but the efficiency behind them sure does. Coker averaged 10.4 yards per target in an offense that struggled badly to throw the ball until the final third of the season. For perspective, that’s the type of efficiency you’d expect from elite wideouts, not a UDFA rookie in a bottom-tier passing attack. Even more promising, Coker commanded at least a 19.2% target share in four of his last five games, showing Bryce Young trusted him when it mattered most.
Now with Thielen out of the picture, Coker slides directly into the slot, where he was quietly lethal in 2024.
SLOT ROLE = FANTASY GOLD
One of the most exciting developments for Coker’s fantasy value is his official move into the slot. In 2024, he ran 64 routes from the slot and turned them into 20 targets for 170 yards—all while working with a locked-in Young during the back half of the season.
Do the math, and you’ll find Coker averaged 2.65 yards per route run from the slot. That ranked sixth in the entire NFL, trailing only stars like Puka Nacua, Chris Godwin, and Terry McLaurin—pretty good company for a rookie who barely saw consistent playing time.
Jalen Coker is projected to be the starting slot receiver for the Carolina Panthers in 2025. So, how was Coker from the slot in 2024?
— Zareh Kantzabedian (@ZKantzFF) August 28, 2025
From the slot, Coker ran 64 routes and earned 20 targets for 170 yards while Bryce Young was starting.
On those targets, Coker averaged 2.65…
Even crazier? Xavier Legette ran far more routes from the slot (44 more targets, in fact) but finished with 135 fewer yards than Coker. Small sample size or not, that screams upside.
If you’re looking for a slot receiver who could turn into a fantasy cheat code, Coker fits the bill.
PANTHER CUBS: A YOUNG AND OPEN WIDE RECEIVER ROOM
Of course, fantasy value always depends on role and competition. Carolina’s starting wide receiver trio is now Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, and Jalen Coker. On paper, Legette projects as the WR2, but there’s a case to be made that Coker is already the better player.

Some highlights:
– 70.5% success rate vs. man coverage
– 78.4% success rate vs. zone coverage
– 70.4% success rate vs press
– Strong hands overall and good contested catch rate

Legette flashed at times but struggled with consistency as a rookie. McMillan, meanwhile, is the shiny new toy and likely gets every opportunity as the Panthers’ outside alpha. That leaves Coker in the slot, a role that can often lead to sneaky volume, especially with Bryce Young’s quick-release style and newfound rhythm late last year.
In other words, while Legette may run in more two-WR sets early, Coker’s efficiency, versatility, and connection with Young could vault him into the WR2 role by midseason.
JALEN COKER FANTASY OUTLOOK
So what’s the fantasy takeaway here? Coker is currently rostered in just 3% of Yahoo Fantasy leagues, meaning he’s widely available on waiver wires. That won’t last long once people catch on to his new role.
He’s not the WR2 just yet, but the path is crystal clear. If he holds down the slot role and continues the late-season chemistry he had with Bryce Young, he’s looking at weekly flex consideration with upside for much more.
In his Reception Perception, WR guru Matt Harmon said of Coker: “Some of the power slot shades of his game remind me of Chris Godwin, but the more conservative and accurate comparison might be Jakobi Meyers.” Both of these comparisons would be strong outcomes for Coker.

The Panthers’ offense should take a step forward with Young in year three, McMillan drawing defensive attention outside, and Coker free to work the middle of the field. If he delivers anything close to his slot efficiency from last year, he’s going to smash his current ‘undrafted’ price tag.
Fantasy football is all about finding value before the rest of your league does, and Jalen Coker fits the bill perfectly. He’s an athletic freak, he’s earned the Panthers’ trust, and he’s stepping directly into a high-volume slot role vacated by Adam Thielen.
Coker isn’t just a deep-league stash anymore. He’s a legitimate breakout candidate who could turn into one of the best late-round picks or waiver wire pickups of the year. If he’s sitting out there in your league, don’t wait. Scoop him up now and thank yourself later.
