Damien Williams is a Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire Priority After David Montgomery’s Injury

Old friend Damien Williams is back and is a hot commodity off of the Week 5 Waiver Wire.

David Montgomery managers might have caught a significant break when he went down grabbing his left knee. It looked horrible at first glance, but it appears he will only be out a few weeks with a potential MCL injury. With Montgomery out of the lineup for a period of time, old friend Damien Williams will be the player to add off of the Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire.

Following Montgomery’s exit, Williams finished the game with 55 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. He also added two receptions for 15 receiving yards.

The last time we saw Williams as a starter he put up an epic 2019 Super Bowl MVP-worthy performance against the 49ers. In that game, Williams racked up 104 rushing yards and a score on 17 carries and caught four of his eight targets for 29 yards and another touchdown. He was on fire throughout the 2019 playoffs, finishing with 196 rushing yards and six total touchdowns after an up-and-down, injury-filled regular season. Even while stuck in an annoying committee with Carlos Hyde, Williams finished the 2019 season with four RB1 performances and a few RB2 games.

“With adding Damien Williams, a guy that you see what he’s done in his previous years going back to Miami, and bringing an element of speed to the offense, different things like that,” Matt Nagy said in July.

While Williams suffered his own thigh bruise during the game, Ian Rapoport said “he should be OK.” Nagy didn’t give us an update during his Monday press conference, but we should know more by mid-week. If Williams is unable to go, rookie Khalil Herbert and Ryan Nall should handle the running back duties.

As of now, Montgomery owners should be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Even if Montgomery only misses a few weeks, Williams should still be a priority Week 5 Waiver Wire pickup. Check out The Wolf’s Rest of Season Fantasy Rankings & Big Board on Tuesday for an update on both running backs.
