“RB: Samaje Perine: Rob Kelley ended last season as the starter, but he’ll be a complementary piece to Perine, a fourth-round power back who averaged 6.0 yards per carry at Oklahoma.” – John Keim, ESPN

Keim gave a projected starting lineup for the Washington Redskins in today’s post which had rookie RB Samaje Perine listed as the starter over Rob Kelley. As mentioned above, Kelley seems to fit the role of the complimentary back better, allowing Washington to use Perine’s size and physicality as the lead back. Perine is the more talented of the two backs, so it seemed like it was only a matter of time until he overtook Kelley on the depth chart. Keep in mind this is not team official though, so the Redskins are likely to be more hesitant with handing the keys over to Perine. As we all know though, it’s basically a matter of time.

Not that we wouldn’t expect to see Falcons RB Devonta Freeman on the field for Week 1, but news like this is always reassuring that Freeman wants to be out there Day 1. The hard nosed runner tore it up in the postseason last year for Atlanta, and should be a key component of the team’s offense once again even with the departure of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

“Cody has done a great job. That’s really why I brought his name up first. He has really improved. He has worked his tail off,” Jackson said. “He deserves the right and the opportunity to walk into this building and walk out there first. They have to take it from him.” – Patrick Maks, clevelandbrowns.com

Browns coach Hue Jackson is apparently pleased with the progress from signal caller Cody Kessler. Tabbing him as QB1 right now, it will be up to the backups to pry the job away from him going forward. Kessler wasn’t that terrible last season, and has the potential to be an okay NFL QB, but it’s not a very encouraging sign for Browns receivers at the get go or rookie TE David Njoku. Hopefully having a year under his belt with lead to increased production from the Browns QB, but I’m not banking on much here.

Quick Slants

  • Former Steelers player Willie Colon said that QB Ben Roethlisberger seriously considered hanging up the cleats this offseason. Not sure why he would with that offense surrounding him.
  • The Jaguars signed third round pick DeDe Westbrook to a four year deal. Westbrook was a Heisman trophy finalist this past year at Oklahoma
  • Colin Kaepernick is being linked to the Seattle Seahawks, as the team has a “legit interest” in the QB.
