Roughnecks WR Sammie Coates Disappears in XFL Debut, Despite 9 Targets

Although PJ Walker and the Roughnecks offense blew up on Saturday, former Steelers wideout Sammie Coates was unspectacular. Coates finished the game with only 26 yards on 2 catches on a team-high 9 targets. Walker looked his way throughout the afternoon, mostly down the field, but Coates had trouble creating separation and winning one-on-one battles.

We’re not writing off Coates completely, considering Walker’s legitimacy and our love for June Jones’ Run n Shoot offense, but this is just another example of Coates underwhelming despite the supreme talent he possesses.

Moving forward, the Walker, Coates, and the rest of the Roughnecks will square off against one of the lesser talented teams in the league in the St. Louis Battlehawks. So, there will be potential moving forward for Coates to make some plays, especially downfield.

Coates has fallen to The Wolf’s WR9 in his updated XFL positional rankings.
